About GroundBreakers
GroundBreakers Modern Dance is an Amsterdam-based contemporary dance organization exploring intercultural movement, philosophy and contemporary social realities through performance, education and community projects.
Founded by choreographer and artistic director CunSong Xu, GroundBreakers develops a physical movement language connecting Eastern philosophy with Western contemporary dance. The organization creates performances and participatory projects that bring together body, memory, migration, identity and human connection.
GroundBreakers works internationally with theatres, festivals, schools, communities and artists in the Netherlands and abroad.
Artistic Vision
The artistic language of GroundBreakers grows from the meeting between Chinese philosophy and contemporary European performance.
Influenced by breathing, silence, concentration and physical awareness, movement is approached as energy, presence and transformation rather than pure technique.
Tai chi, kung fu and classical Chinese movement principles form an underlying physical layer within the artistic work, while contemporary dance, theatre and interdisciplinary collaboration shape its contemporary expression.
GroundBreakers creates performances where body, space, music and social reality meet in an open dialogue.
Dance & Philosophy
For GroundBreakers, movement is not only choreography, but also a way of perception and reflection.
The artistic work is influenced by Chinese philosophical thinking, especially ideas connected to balance, emptiness, listening, time and human presence. Rather than illustrating cultural traditions, the performances search for a contemporary physical language between East and West.
Silence, breath and simplicity are important elements within the creative process. The body becomes a place where personal memory, migration and contemporary questions can become visible.

CunSong Xu is a choreographer and artistic director originally from Jiangsu, China, and based in the Netherlands.
His work moves between dance, theatre, social participation and interdisciplinary collaboration. Through GroundBreakers, he develops performances, workshops and community projects exploring freedom, identity, migration, memory and human connection.

Roos Hendriks supports the organizational and international development of GroundBreakers Modern Dance, connecting artistic projects with cultural partners, communities and institutions.

Alongside theatre productions and contemporary dance performances, the organization creates workshops, intercultural exchange programs and community-based projects for schools, young people, elderly communities and diverse cultural groups.
The organization believes contemporary dance can create dialogue between cultures, generations and social realities through the shared language of the body.
CunSong Xu
Artistiek leider en choreograaf
CunSong Xu is choreograaf en artistiek leider van GroundBreakers Modern Dance. Geboren in Jiangsu, China, studeerde hij aan de muziekafdeling van de Nanjing University of the Arts en studeerde in 2004 af aan Codarts Rotterdam.
Zijn artistieke werk beweegt zich tussen Chinese filosofische tradities en hedendaagse internationale performance. Vanuit GroundBreakers ontwikkelt hij voorstellingen, communityprojecten en educatieve programma’s waarin lichaam, maatschappij en interculturele dialoog centraal staan.
Zijn werk onderzoekt thema’s als vrijheid, identiteit, migratie, geheugen en menselijke verbondenheid. Ademhaling, lichamelijke aanwezigheid en fysieke concentratie vormen een belangrijke basis binnen zijn artistieke taal.
Roos Hendriks
Zakelijk leider
Roos Hendriks is verantwoordelijk voor de zakelijke ontwikkeling en organisatie van GroundBreakers Modern Dance.
Met een achtergrond in grafisch ontwerp en internationale culturele ervaring ontwikkelde zij een sterke interesse in interculturele samenwerking en artistieke uitwisseling tussen Azië en Europa.
Sinds 2018 werkt zij aan de ontwikkeling van GroundBreakers als internationale culturele organisatie, met aandacht voor productie, partnerschappen, educatie en communityprojecten.
Francisca Rijken
Bestuurslid
Francisca Rijken werkt op het snijvlak van dans, educatie, mindfulness en persoonlijke ontwikkeling. Zij studeerde aan de Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten (AHK) en ontwikkelde zich binnen danseducatie, jeugd- en communitygericht werk.
Naast haar ervaring binnen het jeugdtheater werkte zij als adviseur voor het Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst en is zij actief binnen onderwijs- en welzijnscontexten, onder andere als yogadocent en onderwijsassistent bij Spinoza20first. Daarnaast geeft zij les binnen De Dansers.
Jia Zhao
Bestuurslid
Jia Zhao is een Chinees-Nederlandse filmproducent en curator, gevestigd in Amsterdam. Zij is oprichter van MUYI FILM en medeoprichter van Silk Road Film Salon, beide gericht op internationale filmproducties en interculturele uitwisseling tussen Azië en Europa. Sinds 2022 is zij artistiek directeur van het CinemAsia Film Festival in Amsterdam.
Met een internationale achtergrond in documentaire en artistieke cinema werkt Jia Zhao aan films en culturele projecten rond maatschappelijke thema’s en ondervertegenwoordigde stemmen. Haar producties werden geselecteerd voor internationale festivals zoals Cannes en IDFA. Daarnaast is zij actief als mentor, jurylid en curator binnen internationale film- en talentontwikkelingsplatforms.
Chao Shi
Bestuurslid
Chao Shi is een internationaal gerenommeerde balletdanser en docent. Hij volgde zijn opleiding aan de Shanghai Dance School en ontving op jonge leeftijd internationale erkenning als winnaar van de Prix de Lausanne.
Gedurende zijn carrière werkte hij met verschillende internationale dansgezelschappen en ontwikkelde hij een brede ervaring binnen zowel klassiek ballet als hedendaagse danspraktijken. Naast zijn uitvoerende werk is hij actief als docent klassieke techniek en coaching binnen professionele dansopleidingen in Nederland en China. Recent werkte hij als gastdocent ballet aan de Shanghai Dance School.
Ko Frankie
Bestuurslid
Frankie Ko is een in Hongkong geboren muzikant, componist en cultureel verbinder, gevestigd in Nederland. Hij studeerde trombone aan Codarts Rotterdam en vervolgde zijn opleiding aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag, waar hij zich ontwikkelde binnen zowel klassieke muziek als hedendaagse en interculturele muzikale praktijken.
Naast zijn werk als uitvoerend musicus is hij actief op het gebied van compositie, improvisatie, internationale culturele uitwisseling en interdisciplinair performancewerk. Zijn artistieke interesse richt zich op de ontmoeting tussen verschillende muzikale tradities, waaronder klassieke muziek, jazz en Aziatische muzikale invloeden.
Recent werkte hij aan culturele uitwisselingsprojecten tussen Europa en Hongkong en ontwikkelt hij zich als producent en verbinder van internationale muziekprojecten en musici.
